On 10 September an international fleet of 20 Tall Ships from as far away as Mexico and Oman will be visiting the port of Falmouth for the start of the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta. The event will form the centrepiece of year-long celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the first settlement of the Portuguese island of Madeira. The ships will meet in Falmouth where they will be open to the public to view. On board the ships will be hundreds of trainee crew members who will never have been to sea before but are looking forward to an adventure of a lifetime. While in Falmouth, the crews will be entertained with sports and social events and will entertain the public with a traditional crew parade through the streets.
The four days of festivities are free for the public and will end in a spectacular Parade of Sail as the ships leave the harbour and go out to the race start area in preparation of their race to Ilhavo in Portugal, from where they will again race to Funchal for the culmination of the celebrations.
For press accreditation please complete the attached form and send to media@falmouthtallships.co.uk. For further information about the event please contact corinne.hitching@sailtraininginternational.org, tel: 077641 83866.
